Use of Mascots in Colleges and Universities

by Amy Nutt

Mascots on College and University Campuses

Dating back to the 1800’s the use of mascots in colleges and universities has helped to foster pride and raise the spirit of fans. At the earliest incarnation, mascots used on college and university campuses for sports were largely live animals. This has become a tradition and some campuses still practice this even today. Mascots for hundreds perhaps thousands of years have been viewed as symbols of luck. This is why some college and universities will still bring out a live animal onto the field as a mascot to get the crowd involved. Animals such as: lions, tigers, buffaloes, and bulldogs have been used as live mascots to name a few. The Colorado Buffaloes will often bring a buffalo out onto their home field during half-time. Boosters at most campuses supply the necessary funds for the feeding and upkeep of live mascots.

Use of Live Mascots a Controversy for Colleges and Universities

However, the use of live animals as mascots on college and university campuses has been fraught with controversy. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has had much to say about the use of animals as mascots over the years. Many people in the group feel that it is unethical and perhaps unhealthy to keep animals in captivity for the sole purpose of being a mascot. Their concern arises amid some animal mascots dying such as a tiger from renal failure. PETA argues that the cages that the animals are kept in are barely large enough to allow for free movement. Also, sometimes temperatures can be extreme and having thousands of fans in one place near the animal can cause it distress. Rival schools will at times steal the mascot of other schools. This is an ongoing controversy that hasn’t come to a clean end. Some colleges and universities view using live animal mascots as a long standing tradition that is harmless. Animal rights activists feel it is inhumane and unethical and needs to end.

Many Mascots Resemble Those in Professional Sports

Several colleges and universities don’t use live mascots. Their mascots are very much like the ones seen at professional football, soccer, and basketball games. Someone wears a suit and becomes the personality for the team. A lot of intense training can go into becoming a mascot for a college or university. The person has to have a high level of energy, be enthusiastic and engaging, be able to give the mascot “personality,” and adopt gestures befitting a mascot. Many will learn dances, mime, perform skits, waves flags with the crowds, or hold up signs to get the crowd involved. It is quite the acting job and demands that the person performing as the mascot maintain consistent, upbeat, and positive behavior. It’s not only important for the mascot to interact with other college students. A mascot needs to be accessible to all college and university fans such as alumni, community, faculty, and children of fans.

College and University Mascots aren’t Always Stereotypical

The use of mascots in colleges and universities do not always fall along stereotypical lines. Mascots are often patterned for characteristics of the school or the students attending the schools. The boll weevil has been used in college sports as the mascot for The University of Arkansas at Monticello. Some would argue that it doesn’t look like a formidable foe. Yet, it is one of the biggest detriments to cotton crops in the U.S. The Fighting Okra is the mascot representing Delta State. Fans of the school’s team were opposed to using the vegetable because they didn’t feel it portrayed the right image. Some argued that it was mean, green, and indigenous to the Southern region of America. Given this reasoning the mascot name has stuck.

The University of Hawaii-Hilo has taken a different approach with their mascot. They have emulated the Vulcans of Star Trek fan and made them their mascot. Their reasoning is due to the large amount of volcanic activity through the islands, the name fits perfectly.

Sports Improvement-Improve your mind and your game

by Sara Mendez

What if I mess up, what if I drop the ball, what if I look like a moron, what if we lose, or worse yet, injured! These are questions that run through the minds of athletes at all levels form pee-wee to Pro’s. These thoughts can become so powerful and take over a players mind creating self sabotage. Everyone wants to be at their physical and mental best while playing their sport, but this can be difficult to achieve without help.

Everyone wants to be in peak condition, no one wants to think about their flaws. A basketball player might think they are not fast enough or they are too short. Sure you might be short that can’t be fixed, but if you know how the game is played, it can help you. Not every basketball player is seven foot. If you are not fast enough, this can be fixed through both physical and mental workouts. First you need to figure out mentally why you can not run fast, maybe it was a forgotten memory from long ago or simply a learned behavior. Maybe your coach in pee-wee was always telling you that you were too slow and it was embarrassing. Now as a grownup, you still hear this coach in your head you are too slow. This is a learned behavior and over coming this belief can be difficult alone.

Focus, an athlete needs to be in the zone. A baseball player doesn’t hit 5 homeruns in a row because he was lucky, he is focused. If you are not in that zone, it is hard to perform at your best. Maybe there is pressure from coaches, fans or parents, a loud negative person in the stands, or maybe you simply psyched yourself out before the game even started by worrying you would have a bad game. As you can see, many things can cause you to lose the zone. Identifying what makes you lose focus, and learning new tricks to keep you in the zone. You can become unstoppable, not lucky, but focused.

Bang, the gun goes off, swimmers away. Swimming has some luck to it, but ultimately it is all about the skill, not who got a lucky call which it true of many other sports. If you can learn to improve your skill level mentally, the physical improvements will follow which will allow you to create your own luck. By learning visual and mental cues, you can teach your body how to be on point and improve your skill level. When your mind has powerful successes they become easier to recreate on the court during the game.

To truly be called and athlete you must love not only the game but yourself and your team. All of these things build a better, stronger, more valuable athlete. If you are constantly worrying about how you did in the game or how bad your team mate is then you are doing yourself and team a disservice. If you were always told how bad you are a something or how if you teammate would have just passed you the ball you could have won, you are allowing these experiences to take over the game. Once you learn how to deal with these feelings and memories, you will be an amazing athlete.

Sure you can work out at the gym for hours on end to improve your skills, or you can try to focus on something else during the game, but you have not really dealt with the issue. Hypnosis is one way of achieving all of these things and more. It will identify what skills you have and how to develop them without negative energy. You can also learn how to focus your energy on the game instead of an obnoxious fan. All of these things are distractions and they can hinder your progress as an athlete. While under hypnosis your mind is more relaxed and open to suggestions, you will not longer have the feeling you are sabotaging yourself.

Sports, simply always be a fun, happy experience. You should not have to experience a worthless, anxious, or distracted feeling before you begin a game. Sure you can try other things but there is no reason to try those things when there is one good treatment for it. You know what works for you and your lifestyle, make your choice, just do it.

Snowboard Apparel - Things You Need For Snowboarding

by Adrian Fletcher

Getting your own snowboard apparel makes sense for certain items but is not always a wise option for other items until you know exactly what you want. This article will cover what you really need when first snowboarding and what is nice to have but not essential. For non essential items it gives details of how to get these items without buying them.

If you are new to snowboarding or maybe you don’t have a lot of money to spend on gear then I would suggest renting as much of it as you can. Most stuff can be rented these days. The obvious advantages of renting is that you do not have to outlay much money to get all the gear and you can see how the gear works before committing to a purchase.

So equipment like boots and the snowboard are best rented at first. You may also chose to rent a brand or model of board before purchasing it to take it for a test drive so to speak. This way you will know if you like it or it suits your style. People also hire things like goggles and helmets because they are not always needs and are dependent on the weather and type of snowboarding you will be doing.

Some people even rent the apparel, such as the snow jacket and pants. However most people prefer to buy these types of items because they are not that expensive and have many uses rather than just for snowboarding.

If you have decided to get some snowboard apparel I would recommend the following items as necessary.

Gloves, snow jacket, snow pants, eye protection.

This next list of items would be nice to have but not essential until you have fallen in love with the sport.

Boots, snowboard, helmet.

If you are sensitive to the cold weather you may think about purchasing some extra clothing to keep warm. Cold weather underwear is good if you suffer in the cold. You may also want to get a fleece to provide a middle layer of clothing and keep heat from escaping.

When it comes to finding the right apparel you can look in the sports shops or even department stores for the general stuff like the snow jacket and the gloves. The boots and bindings will be found at a good sports store or even a specialist snowboard shop. Shopping in the off season is always a good idea because you can bargain a bit harder on last years snowboard.

You can also shop online at snowboard and ski stores. It’s hard to buy a snowboard from a website but if you do decide to do this make sure you have tried it out a similar model beforehand.

for smaller apparel like gloves, hats and scarve you could even take alook at the internet auctions. There are great prices to be found on ebay but factor in shipping costs if you are comparing like for like.

Once you have all your snowboard apparel you are ready to start the fun. If you are new it may take a bit of time to get the basic skills down. When you have these skills there will be no looking back in your snowboarding adventures.

There Is More Than One Way to Ride a Mountain Bike

by Alison Addy

Discusses the nine kinds of mountain biking and the types of mountain bikes used for each kind.

There are nine different kinds of mountain biking, each offering its own unique type of thrill or enjoyment. BMX biking is on small, nimble bikes with 20 inch wheels. These bikes are used for jumping and are usually used at a skate park, or in an area that has dirt mounds to jump off. Their small size and and short wheel base makes them perfect for performing biking stunts and tricks.

A cross country mountain bike is perfect for riding on hills and through uneven terrain. It’s an easier sport than BMX biking, but most cross country bikers like to travel long distances, as a cross country runner would do. This keeps these bikers as fit as cross country runners as well.

Cyclo cross biking is a combination of road biking and mountain biking. The sport involves a course that covers both on and off road sections. The course may contain water crossings and other obstacles as well.

Dirt jumping is a kind of mountain biking that is done on large man made mounds of dirt. While they are aerial in the middle of the jump, the biker will attempt to perform tricks and spins in the air. The mounds are placed relatively close together, so the biker builds up more speed and height on each subsequent jump.

Downhill mountain biking is just that: a race to bike down a hill as fast as possible. This is a a very strenuous but thrilling sport, since travelling downhill on mountain bikes at high speeds over uneven terrain is very difficult and dangerous.

Free mountain biking means the biker hugs the contours of the mountain to find the best route to the bottom. This is a very popular sport since each biker has his own style to express and it is fun to watch the various ways they do so.

Single speed mountain biking uses the simplistic approach to mountain biking. The bikes are designed with only one speed and very few moving parts, yielding an ultra light bike that relies solely on the strength of the biker, rather than a mechanical advantage. Street or urban mountain bikes are used in the city, almost like a skateboard. Urban mountain bikers use railings, ledges and other features of the urban landscape to perform their tricks such as “stalls” and “grinds”. Time trial position is something everyone would like to know about. Trail mountain biking uses a very low framed bike with small wheels. This allows the biker to jump the bike over obstacles. This is a difficult mountain biking sport, requiring a good sense of balance and a high degree of concentration.

Field glasses come in distinguishable makes and modelings, however the primary advantage is that once illumination goes away or sundown occurs, an individual has the ability to see as though it is daylight. In addition, these nighttime optics are available in monocular flairs which are comprised of a single optical similar to a telescope.

Nighttime telescopes are a dissimilar style of a single infrared optical. Overall both allow an individual to see at nighttime or in low-level lighting. Moreover, there are hands-free night-sight devices such as night-sight goggles that possess a headstrap kit that provides goggles to be connected to a headpiece.

Night opticals use electronic technology and do not actually use an optical lens system equally with standardized field glasses utilize to get an image. Skateboarding Shoes and Making Your Own Skateboarding Video

by Maxwell Maseko

Usually, people would think that any sport shoes would do for skateboarding. However, this is not true. While regular sneakers may seem to work, they might not be able to provide the right protection and maneuverability that skateboarding shoes can offer. And it is not enough to just get the next pair of skateboarding shoes you see off the rack. You have to be careful about buying new skateboarding shoes.

When buying skateboarding shoes you have to look at four important things: the ability of the shoes to give protection, the shoelaces, comfort, and grip.

Comfort - just like any kind of shoes, skateboarding shoes should be comfortable for the wearer, otherwise, it will be difficult to be wearing them for long periods. Uncomfortable shoes may cause sores or blisters when worn during skateboarding for over two hours. Uncomfortable shoes may also make it difficult, if not impossible to do certain tricks during skateboarding.

Skateboarding video

As a compilation or a team-up between respected skateboard artists, a skateboarding video provides lessons and advice that can not be drawn from reading ordinary how-to books. Skateboarding videos work far more effective than books as instructional materials because the former can be easily comprehended by showing the moves and tricks as they are being played over and over again. Anyone who is interested in skateboarding can quickly learn tricks, from basic to daredevil moves, by simply watching the videos.

But skateboarding videos are not just for masters and professionals. Anybody who has a fresh and extraordinary skateboard move can share to the world such ability by making a personal skateboarding video. If you have your very own skateboarding video, the chances that skateboarding enthusiasts will recognize you will be higher; and when this happens, it might not be long for skateboarding companies to bankroll and promote your feats. A quality skateboarding video will be your stepping stone as you go up the world of skateboarding.

Above all, do not forget to perform amazing tricks for your video. Potential sponsors and ordinary viewers of skateboarding videos want attention-grabbing and uniquely amusing stunts on the deck of your skateboard. Therefore, your video should showcase your skateboarding skills.

Bouldering - Climbing Well Yet Low

by Aazdak Alisimo

If you decide to go climbing on the spur of the moment, it can be difficult to do a full climb because you need equipment, support and so on. One way around this is to go bouldering. It is also a great way to work on your technique and strength.

Bouldering is not going out for the evening in Bouder, Colorado. It is the act of climbing compact surfaces with interesting characteristics. Often, this means a boulder, which is where it gets its name. 10 to 15 foot walls are also popular.

At its core, every climb is a problem to be solved. How do you get from point A to point B? Unlike large climbing formations, bouldering is great because you can define the problem by going up, down, sideways and so on.

At its outset, climbing boulders was seen as a method for training for bigger climbs. While some stick to this view, many now view bouldering as a sport within itself. An interesting boulder can offer many different routes and be climbed for years.

Once you get into bouldering, there is a tendence to forget about safety. How banged up can you get if you are only 8 feet up? You would be surprised. Broken arms and ankles happen. Always use a crash pad to cush the brunt of falls.

The weight your body has to carry in the air is the same at 5 feet or 50. Just because your bouldering, it doesn’t mean you aren’t going to put strain on your body. Warm up to avoid pulling muscles and stessing your joints.

An offshoot of bouldering is buildering. Walk by a fine dining establishment that serves adult beverages and has climbers as clientele and you will see a strange thing. There are people climbing various wall surfaces outside the establishment.

Buildering can be a good bit of fun, but is hardly high in the pantheon of safe climbing. The ground is usually brick, concrete or something hard. Falls can hurt. The local authorities also tend to take a dim view of the activity and arrests are common.

Back to bouldering. Overall, it is my favorite climbing option. Why? You can do it at the spur of the moment, you can really push your skill, the same boulder offers a lot over variations and it is very safe.
