Cross Stitch Wedding Patterns Help Create An Heirloom

by Julia Wigham

People often look for unique gifts to give to a new bride and groom and cross stitch wedding patterns are a way to create a great gift and provide a couple a family heirloom that can be passed down for generations and serve as a great reminder of a special day. Marriage patterns can also be used to make anniversary presents.

Sampler style cross stitch wedding patterns are very popular and dominate the number of items available. Sampler patterns often have some sort of fancy border. The patterns also come complete with instructions on all the different letters of the alphabet and numbers, so that people can customize the gift for the bride and groom. Larger sampler projects will often also contain some sort of romantic quote or biblical verse as part of the design.

One strong theme in wedding cross stitch patterns is religion. Many contain faith symbols like the Star of David or the Christian cross. Biblical verses significant to love and marriage are also a major theme. 1 Corinthians 13:3-8 and Luke 6:48 are two popular verses.

Many companies offer cross stitch kits with a marriage theme. Janlynn and Bucilla produce these patterns and Bucilla also cross brands some of their patterns and kits with Mary Engelbreit. Dimensions has a wide variety of cross stitch wedding patterns. Dimensions has over 20 different patterns in this theme and most of them are sold as a kit that includes the mat, threads needed and, of course, instructions for completion.

Leisure Arts has two books of patterns for cross stitch art and each book has at least one or two wedding patterns among them. Look for the pattern titled “Wedding Ring Bouquet” in The Best of Paula Vaughan and also pick up The Best of Teresa Wentzler: Sampler Collection. McCall’s, famous for sewing patterns, has also published a cross stitch pattern book with several wedding sampler patterns entitled Better Homes & Garden’s Country Cross Stitch.

Before you started your stitching you should have decided how you wanted to present the finished piece. Ideas include a ring pillow, a decorated album cover, a handkerchief for the bride or a framed picture.

However you use your cross stitch wedding patterns you can be sure that the gift will take pride of place during the celebrations and be treasured, like ours, for many years to come.

The Language Of Birding

by Spence Talbots

Bird watching is like an addiction. Once you are hooked, there is no getting away from it. Since doing so is hopeless, you need to understand the terminology you will here.

Hawking is a form of food gathering. As the name suggest, the bird will wait at a high point and inspect below for food. When it sights said food, it swoops down and snatches it.

Air sacs are a section of a bird’s respiratory system. They are attached to lungs and extend throughout the body cavity. Depending on the species, can temporarily store large amounts of air to cool the body and maximize oxygen intake.

Anting is a bizarre bird ritual. Many species will allow ants to crawl through their wings. The ants effectively preen the wings as they eat and store anything they find.

Birds are often cleaning themselves. This act is referred to as preening. Each species handles it differently, but a common characteristic is the use of the beak to clean wings and such. Not to be confused with anting.

When a female lays eggs, the resulting eggs are known as a clutch. It has no relation to vehicles. The number of eggs in the clutch depends on the bird.

The act of mobbing is very interesting amongst birds. It refers to the little guys standing up to a big predator. Many smaller birds will unite to attack and drive away a larger predator. This act is particularly prevalent during nesting periods.

The act of probing refers to bird conduct during feeding sessions. Birds will probe areas such as dead bark, mud and what have you to find food. The type of probing is dependent upon the particular bird and is a crude method for identification.

The act of stooping refers to a predator bird hunting smaller birds. It is the equivalent of the car chase in a movie. The predator will chase the smaller bird until it captures or fails.

The speculum is a marketing area found on a duck. Many ducks have a patch of color on their wings. The color distinction and shape can be used for identification purposes.

A diurnal species refers to a bird that feeds and is active primarily during the day, the opposite of how most birds customarily act.

Nalospi is a measurement that helps in the classification of sighted birds. The Nalospi is the distance between the tip of the bill and the forward edge of the nostril. It is not always easy to see and calculate.

The act of foot-raking is distinct to a classification of birds that feed in the water. The term refers to their moving their feet about in the water to get animals to move so they can feed upon them.

The wattle is one of the easier markers on bird. It is the structure on the top of the head. It can be a comb, gathering of feathers or bone structure. Identify the wattle, and you are on your way to identifying the bird.

The important thing to understand about birding is the language is important, but not critical. Gaining an appreciation of our feathered friends through observation is the key.
