Glucosamine and Chondroitin sulphate

Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate are sold as dietary supplements. They are naturally occurring in the body. Glucosamine is an amino sugar which stimulates the production of glycosaminoglycans and augments the production of cartilage. Chondroitin sulphate enhances the elasticity of cartilage. Glucosamine and chondroitin are produced from crab, lobster shells and animal cartilage respectively.

Uses: Treatment of Osteoarthritis: Glucosamine and chondroitin are found to be having moderate effects on arthritic symptoms. Glucosamine is shown to slow the progression of arthritis.

Available forms: Glucosamine is available as glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride and N-acetyl glucosamine. Chondroitine is available as chondroitin sulfate.

Side effects: Glucosamine is well tolerated and side effects are rare. Those include flatulence and softened stools.

Cautions: Consult your doctor before taking glucosamine and chondroitin. Safety of these substances in children and pregnant women is not known. Check with your doctor if you are diabetic, taking blood thinners, aspirin or any other medication.
