Over The Counter Solutions for Acid Reflux

by M B Beam

There are various different kinds of acid reflux over the counter mediations that one can now use to help treat this particular stomach condition. In many cases, people who have used them as soon as they feel attack happening have found that they have been extremely effective at helping to relieve the symptoms quickly associated with this particular disorder.

One of the most popular of all these kinds of treatments available are those known as antacids. These work by neutralizing the excess acid, which the stomach has produced, and will then relieve the pain and discomfort that one feels when attack happens. One can purchase several different makes including Rolaids, Tums, Mylanta and Maalox.

But although they may contain various different ingredients within them, they all work in a very similar way. It is important that when you are using any of these kinds of over the counter treatments you read the manufacturers instructions carefully. Plus it is crucial that you explain to your doctor what you are using as these may well interfere with any other medication that they have prescribed.

Most of these kinds of treatments come in either tablet or liquid form and will often need to be used between three or four times each day. In order to get the full benefits from the tablets these should be thoroughly chewed before swallowing.

However, because these medications contain chemicals you may find that they can cause some unwanted side effects, and should not be used for extended periods of time. If you at any stage start to suffer from vomiting, an upset stomach, pains to the stomach or other health conditions you should immediately seek medical advice.

As well as antacids, which can help to treat acid reflux there are other over the counter medications which some sufferers prefer to use called H2 blockers. Again, these treatments (Axid, Pepcid, Zantac and Tagamet) contain ingredients that rather than neutralizing the acid work on preventing it being secreted by the stomach. Although these are very effective, they take a little longer to work on actually relieving the symptoms of acid reflux compared to antacids.

But unlike antacids, H2 blockers do relieve the symptoms of acid reflux for much longer. Again as with any over the counter medicine you should be aware that these may cause possible side effects and a person should see their doctor if the effects persist. So if you find yourself suffering from headaches, dizziness, rashes or diarrhoea for any extended period of time then you should see your doctor immediately.

The various different kinds of acid reflux over the counter medications that we have mentioned are very effective at providing relief from the symptoms associated with this condition. However, they will not provide you with the cure to your problem and you may need to make changes to your diet and lifestyle to really get improved results for the long term.
