What Causes Procrastination?

by MJ Thompson

Although the root causes of procrastination can be many, generally speaking they can be placed into 2 categories. Psychological and Physiological. We will strive to give you a full explanation of both categories below.

1 Generally speaking Psychological reasons can vary greatly but is is usually possible to categorize them as follows:-

Anxiety, low self worth and a self defeating mentality. If you are faced with a task that needs to be completed some groups of people will fret over it. Others who suffer from low self worth will feel that they are not to complete the task due to lack of ability. The final group of people will believe that they will fail at the task even before they start.

Often when faced with a task people will persuade themselves that the task will require much more work than it actually does. Unfortunately this type of procrastination can soon become a habit.

2. Physiological. The causes of this type of procrastination seem to surround the role that the prefrontal cortex of the brain plays in a person’s life. It is this area of the brain which controls our executive brain functions such as planning, the control of a person’s impulses, their attention span or lack of it and is also there to help filter out those distractions which might otherwise stimulate the brain.

Physiological Reasons for procrastination can be caused by damage to this are of the brain. A lower than normal level of activation may also lead to physiological procrastination. A classic symptom of this kind of procrastination is the inability to filter out distractions and a distinct lack of organisation.

One of the best ways to handle procrastination for people who feel that tasks are too complicated or are overwhelmed by them is to break each task down. By making each task much smaller and consisting of several steps they can give themselves deadlines which they must try to keep

As you can see there are many causes of procrastination and it is wise to speak with either your doctor, therapist or psychiatrist in order to find out just what the underlying problem is. Sometimes procrastination can be cured by just reprogramming your subconscious that’s where products like procrastination blaster come in.
